Synopsis:
A green, grumpy, wildly popular ogre will sing and dance on a Seattle stage this summer on his way to Broadway. Seattle will maintain its reputation as a steppingstone to Broadway when "Shrek The Musical" debuts on Aug. 14. The new musical is based on the original 2001 "Shrek" film, drawn from characters in William Steig's beloved storybook. "Shrek the Musical, the tale of a big green ogre, has a date on Broadway this fall. A stage version of the popular DreamWorks Animation SKG feature will begin preview performances in November - with casting, theater and opening date to be announced. The show, which has book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori, will play an out-of-town tryout at Seattle's Fifth Avenue Theatre Aug. 14-Sept. 21. "It's the plot of the first 'Shrek' movie,'' said Jason Moore, who will direct the production. The first "Shrek" film was released in 2001, followed by "Shrek 2" in 2004 and "Shrek the Third" last year. "But because we are going deeper into the emotional lives and back stories of the characters, we reveal things about them that none of the movies revealed," he added. The score will be composed by Jeanine Tesori ("Caroline, Or Change"); Pulitzer Prize-honored playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is writing the book and lyrics; and Jason Moore ("Avenue Q") is directing. "This has the potential to be a great musical," said David Armstrong, artistic head of the 5th Avenue Theatre, which has hosted premieres of the Broadway musicals "Hairspray" and "The Wedding Singer."
Shrek, Donkey and Fiona expect the show to open on Broadway in New York in the fall of 2008. Dreamworks say this is its first venture in turning animated movies into a stage version. Seattle has a history of previewing musicals for Broadway. Others include "Young Frankenstein," "The Light in the Piazza," and "Hairspray." Playbill.com has learned that Christopher Sieber (Spamalot, The Triumph of Love) will be part of the Shrek cast. Additional casting and creative team members will be announced shortly.
